While much of New Jersey has been developed, the Pinelands still remain largely untouched. Also called the Pine Barrens, this 'barren' area remains because of its sandy, un-farmable soil and preservation efforts that continue to protect this 1.1 million acre treasure. The New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve was the first National Reserve in America, established in 1978.
